Scoliosis is commonly thought of an S shaped curvature of the spine. Scoliosis is a very complex spinal deformity that can involve the neck, the head, the upperback, the mid back, the lower back and even the pelvis. It can involve children up to maturing adults. Depending on the age of the patient and symptoms, treatment can vary from observation, to physical therapy, to injections to bracings to surgical intervention.
This is a 14 year old male, M.K. that had scoliosis that was observed for about three years. He was braced but continued to progress, even in the brace. After multiple conversations with the patient and family, he finally underwent scoliosis correction. He was discharged from the local Long Island Hospital where we did the surgery on post operative day 3. He did remarkably well and is finishing up high school without restrictions.
